| johno | 2010-03-09 21:36:32 The link below will take you to the CAA website. The CAA is the Civil Aviation Association (oopps Authority!! - thanks Lucas) of New Zealand and the official body responsible for all things that fly in and around NZ.Under 'public info' click on 'A to Z topics'. Scroll down to the 'How to' booklets and click on 'How to be a pilot'.It has pretty well all the information you need to understand the process. To find out the costs, you will need to talk to a local training company. At the end of the CAA booklet, they tell you how you can go about finding training companies near to where you are.Good luck. |

| Lucas | 2010-03-09 22:17:47 The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website would be a good place to start as mentioned by johno (just a heads up, its Authority not Association).Maths, English and Physics are the main subjects (plus Geography would help) that you would need to have a decent understanding of, and it is preferred that you have credits in these subjects at NCEA Level 2. This should get you into most aciation courses. These courses range in what you learn, some start from scratch for people who have never flown in their life, to CPL pilots (Commercial Pilots License) going for their ATPLs (Airline Transport Pilot License). These courses are generally three years long. To become an airline pilot, you need an ATPL as well as a few 'ratings' (let you fly in different conditions and different aircraft types). The essential ratings are Twin Engine, Instrument, Night and Turbine ratings. To get an ATPL you will need at least 1500 hours and be at least 21 years old (First you need a Private Pilots License (50 hours and 17 years old) then a CPL (200 hours and 18 years old) before you can obtain an ATPL). |
