markie o 2010-07-28 14:56:32 In this part of the world (US Midwest), when someone says daddy long legs they most often are referring to harvestmen, (can you believe that there are thousands of individual species of that guy). In the world of bug folks, daddy long legs are cellar spiders. I've yet to hear someone around here refer to crane flies as daddy long legs, but I'm sure that they do.

Ḳạḳạṛịḳị 2010-07-28 19:59:49 I've never heard anyone call them anything in particular here in Australia. They are not common here, so I think it's like the person above said. Most people probably just think they are giant mosquitoes. The animal that we call a Daddy Long Legs, in Australia, is the Daddy Long Legs spider. Apparently, they are sometimes called Cellar spiders in the US, but that name will never take off in Australia because we don't have cellars in Aust., so the name would be meaningless here.

Yukon C 2010-07-28 15:26:57 People call them different names. I call it what it is-a crane fly. But some call those daddy-long-legs here, too.

Crikey a Wild Ski Bum 2010-07-28 14:22:41 We call them mayflies or crane flies, they're not actually that common so a lot of people just say "eew a giant mosquito!"Daddy long legs in the US is the name for a spider-looking animal called a harvestman (there are also spiders that look just like harvestmen, so it gets even more confusing)http://cerebraldump.com/insects/IMG_1637b.jpg

electric feel 2010-07-28 13:19:23 Edit: Okay I was totally wrong. I just called my sister in here because I got confused if we call that a daddy long leg. And we call those Mosquito hawks. But there's a spider with similar long legs in which we call daddy long legs. Haha. :P

princess 90 09 2010-07-28 13:15:24 Well, from the link it looks like in the United States it's called a Crane Fly. But with living in the US all my life I've never heard of a Crane Fly. So I would say a Crane Fly or a Harvestmen (a non poisonous spider) in the United States, a Daddy-Long-Leg in Australia and New Zealand. Hope that helped :)
