2010-07-29 01:09:38 I'm no expert, but from what i understand archaeologists and scientists have yet to discover the reason for why the maoris migrated to New Zealand. They came from East Polynesia sometime before 1300. The voyage was likely to have been long, difficult and hazardous to the crew members, so their reasons for leaving were likely for safety (fear of another group), food (lack of it), or land (lack of space to grow food/live). There are maori legends that explain the migration as being due to famine, over population and warfare. Also, their boats were only large canoes, so it took a lot of people to row. I imagine that they would have been relieved to have arrived in New Zealand and would have marveled at its lush forests and wildlife and been intimidated by the steep cliff faces.Hope this helps |
