I do know the Cook straight between the 2 islands and it can be treacherous so an attempt to Kayak would need to be well planned with boats following you. Why not just kayak all around the sounds out of Picton there is some glorious water ways but even then boaties choose the weather as it can also get very rough and dangerous.
